U.S. Huntsville Land Office - Registers' account book, 1809-1814.

District land office Registers were the record keepers of the office, handling all affairs except those relating to finance which were performed by land office Receivers. This volume contains the records of the early Registers of the Huntsville Land Office, and its precedessors the Twickenham and Nashville Land offices. The accounts are of two types - monies paid for lands sold and public lands applied for, as well as those reverted to the U.S. The "account of public lands applied for to the Register, showing those for which 1/4 purchase money has been paid and those reverted to the U.S. for failure to make payment" is contained in one half of the volume. Each entry includes the date of the application, the name and residence of the purchaser, the location of the tract, the number of acres, the price per acre, and amount paid in purchase money. At the end of each month a separate listing is given for those lands reverted to the U.S. Those entries include the date of application, the name and residence of the purchaser, the tract location, the number of acres, the amount of purchase money paid, the expenses incurred by the sale, and the amount forfeited by the purchaser. The remainder of the volume contains an "account of monies entered which have been deposited and paid on account of public lands purchase," which lists all payments made on a daily basis. Each entry contains the date entered, the purchasers name and residence, to whom paid (i.e., Receiver's name), amount paid, number of receipt, date of receipt, location of the tract, number of acres, and the type of payment (e.g. deposit, 1st installment, 2nd installment, etc.). This volume provides excellent documentation of the first land bought in northern Ala. and of the relationship between the work of district land office Registers and Receivers.
